The race to the bottom continues in the carpenters union with EST and timberman Joe Geiger recommending that the timbermens contract be changed to include a b rate timberman to replace half the current timbermen. While Joe Geiger could not be reached for comment it has been said that he believes that timbermen are overpaid as well as all the other members of the district council.
All of the 1556 delegates have come out in support of this new wage deal and say that the increased manhours they expect to get from this makes it a great deal. The more manhours that the council gets, the more assessment money there is available to pay the $150,000 salaries of the timbermen delegates and so this is a great deal for the guys who want to join the union to work for this lower rate and a great deal for the council which gets more money from these guys and well worth the sacrifice.
When asked where the current timbermen will work when half of them are replaced with the cheaper workers, Joe Geiger said that he would not stop any of the current timbermen switching to the lower rate to secure some of these lower paying jobs for themselves.
When asked how he sees the future of the carpenters union Joe Geiger said that he is very proud of the carpenters and that the carpenters are well ahead of the other trades and that he thinks the carpenters union will win the race to the bottom. While other trades are sitting idly by, the District Council is proactively cutting its members wages and benefits to give developers the best deal. He also pointed out that the Wall and Ceiling named Vice President Cavanaugh as man of the year for his efforts on their behalf and the devolpers are now pointing to the carpenters as an example of how union officials can get devolpers a skilled workforce for 40 per cent less.
WHEN A UNION CAN STAND BY AND WATCH OVER 800 DISABLED MEMBERS LOSE ALL BENEFITS, THEN CROW ABOUT HOW WELL THE UNION IS DOING, ENCOURAGE B CARPENTERS AND COVER THEM WITH THE DISABLED MEMBERS BENEFITS....EVEN RAY CHARLES COULD SEE THE WRITING ON THE WALL....
